Anti-wrinkle injections / Botox Injections

About Botox Injections or Anti-Wrinkle Treatments

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a natural substance that comes from plants and animals and in high doses is highly poisonous (hence ‘toxin’). However, it can be injected into humans in extremely small concentrations and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, effectively leaving the muscles without instructions to contract, therefore paralyzing them.

Injected botulinum toxin (Botox) prevents the release of acetylcholine, preventing contraction of the muscle cells. The effect of botulinum toxin causes a reduction in abnormal muscle contraction allowing the muscles to become more relaxed.

Botox TM was first introduced in 1989 to treat specific problems of the eye muscles. Since then its range of use for medical and cosmetic purposes including Anti-wrinkle treatments has grown considerably. Today, it can be used for treating bladder problems, limb spasticity, facial spasms and migraines as well as treating hyperhidrosis (excess sweating treatments), and of course as an anti-wrinkle treatment for treating wrinkle formation and helping to reverse or improve the ageing process with the removal of lines and wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is manufactured under several different names from large and reputable pharmaceutical and chemical companies. Here in the clinic, we use Botox TM by the company Allergan, which is the original Botox product launched in 1989 and remains the most popular Botox product to date. Millions of beauty clients have been effectively treated with Botox TM. We also use Xeomin from the company Merz, which is a product with very similar characteristics which makes it ideal to be used for Botox injections and Anti-Wrinkle Treatments.

What can we treat with our Botox Injections?

We use botulinum toxin (Botox Injections) as an Anti-Wrinkle Treatment.  This is because Botox can relax the muscles of the face which can help to prevent wrinkle formation and hold of the ageing process. The Anti-Wrinkle Treatment process takes about 15-20 minutes depending on the number of muscles treated, and the effect of this beauty treatment will last about 3 months in most people. The needles used for our Botox Injection treatment are extremely small and the procedure involves very little pain relative to other injections one may receive medically. The beauty treatment effect usually takes 3-5 days to become apparent, with up to 2 weeks for the full visible effects.

Another popular use for Botox Injections is the treatment of excess sweating or Hyperhidrosis.  For more about this treatment please see the Hyperhidrosis section below.

The 3 most common cosmetic areas to be treated with Botox Injections are;

The glabellar muscle – this is the muscle at the top of the nose which causes the characteristic ’11 lines’ when frowning. Over time, these lines become more permanent. Botulinum toxin in this muscle reduces the formation of these lines.  This beauty treatment can also be known as Botox Injections for treating frowning wrinkles above the nose.

The forehead – when eyebrows are raised in surprise, your forehead frontalis muscle forms horizontal lines. Botulinum toxin can prevents this. This is of the most popular areas in newscasters and actors (watch for this on TV). Note that to treat the forehead, the glabellar must be done at the same time.  This beauty treatment can also be known as Botox Injections for treating forehead wrinkles.

The crows’ feet – the muscles around the eyes do a lot of work when you smile. You will notice how these areas wrinkle especially at the side of the eyes. Again, over time these become permanent. Note that treating both eyes counts as a single ‘area’ of treatment.  This beauty treatment can also be known as Botox Injections for treating crows feet wrinkles around the eyes.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) can also be used to treat other areas of the face in combination with other beauty and cosmetic treatments – we can discuss these with you during your initial consultation with our clinician.

Hyperhidrosis / Excess Sweating Treatments

Excess sweating affects 1 in 100 people in the UK and mainly involves the armpits, palms and the feet. It can be extremely distressing and difficult to treat. Injections of botulinum toxin (Botox Injections) into these areas of excessive sweating have been shown to reduce the amount of sweat produced markedly and safely, although the effect is variable and not permanent. Botox Treatments for excessive sweating problems is a far safer option than surgery. The armpits are the most commonly treated area with Botox Injections and the process usually takes about 30-45 minutes.

dermal fillers

Dermal Fillers

About Dermal Filler Treatments

The fundamental working principle of dermal fillers is that they have a “plumping” effect. This simply implies that they will plump-up the area which has received the injection, leveling it with other parts of the skin and making it look plumped out, even and no longer sunken. Ultimately, different fillers may achieve this goal in slightly different ways, but the result is that the skin will look plump and firm, young and refreshed.  It is very popular for dermal fillers to be used to enhance lips although they can also be used for other purposes.

The most common dermal fillers used are based on hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance in the skin which creates the ‘cement’ between the cells making up the wall of the skin. As we age, the cement wears away and the volume gradually depletes, thus the skin looks more sunken and hollowed. By artificially reintroducing the cement, we return the volume to the areas to restore the youthful look. These fillers are by their nature temporary, and the effect of this beauty treatment usually lasts around 6-9 months. Unlike most beauty treatments, dermal fillers provide an almost immediate effect which continues to improve over subsequent days.

Where can dermal fillers be used and for what beauty treatments?

Dermal fillers are primarily used in the face to restore lost volume. These will be most evident in several key areas

Nasolabial folds – these are the lines which pass from the side of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. They are the most noticeable of areas for volume loss in the face, and the most commonly and easily correctable with fillers.  These beauty treatments can also be known as Nosolabial Fold Fillers.

Marionette lines – these lines drop down from the corners of the mouth to the chin and give the impression of the old-style ventriloquist doll, or ‘marionette’.  these beauty treatments can also be known as Marionette Line Fillers.

Forehead and crows-feet lines – these wrinkles become more permanent as we age as the muscles involved are always active in our expressions. In combination with botulinum toxin (botox), these can be very effectively treated.  These beauty treatments can also be known as Forehead and Crows Feet Fillers as well as Forehead Treatments and Crows Feet Treatments.

Lips – these are a very popular treatment area for those who require a fuller look to their lips. These beauty treatments can also be known as Lip Fillers and Lip Dermal Fillers.

Cheek augmentation – over the years the cheeks, which have a plump and youthful appearance start to lose volume and flatten out. In some cases they become hollow or indented. Fillers can be used very effectively in these areas.  These beauty treatments can also be known as cheek fillers, non surgical cheek bone enhancements and non surgical face lifts.

What kinds of dermal fillers do we use for our beauty treatments?

We use Juvederm Ultra and Belotero in the DR-SR beauty clinic. Both of these dermal fillers have excellent safety and effectiveness records, and they both have lidocaine added. This is a local anaesthetic that makes for a much more comfortable beauty treatment procedure.

How long does the dermal filler beauty treatment take?

Firstly our clinician assesses exactly what is needed to get the best results, the amount of filler required of course depends on the area treated. A numbing cream is applied to the area for 45 minutes to allow the maximum comfort for the procedure. The injections themselves require 15-20 minutes, more if several areas are treated.

The skill with this beauty treatment is not in knowing how much filler needs to be used, but how little.

Chemical Peel treatments & other Skin Treatments

Chemical Peels

About Chemical Peels

If you have ever thought that your skin is starting to show the effects of time, you may wish that there was a way to restore the youthful ‘glow’ to your face. You may even have tried some of the many ‘anti-ageing’ serums or creams on the market, that often provide only a very mild improvement. If you are looking for a more effective solution to the ageing process then you may wish to consider a chemical peel or similar skin treatment.

Chemical peels are a powerful exfoliant that remove the dead skin layers from the outer ‘crust’ of the skin, revealing the younger, fresher layers underneath. They also even out the skin texture and coloration, hence their use in age spots. Chemical Peels used in the clinic are much more powerful than commercially available exfoliants, although they can be used in combination. The chemical peels in our range of beauty treatments range from mild ‘lunchtime peels’ through to more intense peels that remove more layers of skin.

What do we treat with this beauty treatment?

As well as an excellent exfoliating  beauty treatment to make the skin feel smoother and younger, chemical peels can also be used to treat acne and acne scars, rosacea and pigmented areas etc. Chemical peels can reduce fine lines under the eyes or around the mouth, and reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles.

How many of these beauty treatments are needed?

This depends very much on the type of skin that you have, and what we are treating. Usually a course of treatments will be either 4 or 6 in total for the maximum benefit. In addition, creams will need to be applied during the period in between our beauty treatments. Your doctor will discuss what combination of beauty treatments will work best for your face at your consultation.

How long does a chemical peel treatment usually take?

The chemcial peel treatment usually lasts between 15-30 minutes.

Can any skin colour be treated with our Chemical Peel beauty treatment?

Most certainly. The darker the skin, the more powerful the chemical peel treatment will need to be. Again, your doctor will be able to advise on this at your assessment.

What do we use for our chemical peel treatments?

The mildest chemical peels are called AHA, or alpha-hydroxy acid peels. These are made from naturally occurring acids found in fruits and other foods, and have been used in beauty treatments for treating the skin since the days of the ancient Egyptians. AHA can be found in many commercially available preparations, but by law only concentrations of 10% or less may be sold over the counter and provide a limited effect only. We use concentrations of 20% upwards. These give an immediate freshness and glow to the skin that you would already have forgotten that you once had.

The stronger chemical peels are called TCA, (Tri-Chlor acetic acid), which cause 3-7 days of peeling depending upon depth achieved. Results achieved with this beauty treatment will be smoother, firmer, fresher skin. We call this a ‘resurfacing’ peel as a lot more skin layers are removed with TCA. We use 15 – 20% TCA in our stronger chemical peel treatments.

The Obagi Deep Blue peel is like the ‘Lexus’ of Chemical peels. Obagi is a California-based cosmeceutical company that supplies to spas, cosmetic clinics and dermatologists all over the world. Highly sought after by those who demand the best, Obagi peels are the peels of choice for the discerning patient and clinician alike.
