Anti-wrinkle Treatments including Botox Injections

Botulinum toxin otherwise known as Botox is a natural substance that comes from plants and animals and in high doses is highly poisonous (hence ‘toxin’). However, it can be injected into humans in extremely small concentrations and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, effectively leaving the muscles without instructions to contract, therefore paralysing them.

Injected botox prevents the release of acetylcholine, preventing contraction of the muscle cells. The effect of botox injections causes a reduction in muscle contraction allowing the muscles to become more relaxed.

Botox TM was first introduced in 1989 to treat specific problems of the eye muscles. Since then its range of use for medical and cosmetic purposes has grown considerably. Today, it can be used to treat bladder problems, limb spasticity, facial spasms, migraines, hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), and of course wrinkle formation (the ageing process).

Botox is manufactured under several different names from large and reputable pharmaceutical and chemical companies. Here in the DR-RS Beauty clinic, we use Botox TM by the company Allergan, which is the original product launched in 1989 and remains the most popular to date. Millions of clients have been effectively treated with Botox TM. We also use Xeomin from the company Merz, which is an equally effective brand of botox.

What areas can we treat with our botox injections?

We use botulinum to relax the muscles of the face to prevent wrinkle formation. The process takes about 15-20 minutes depending on the number of muscles treated, and the effect lasts about 3 months in most people. The needles used are extremely small and the procedure involves very little pain relative to other injections one may receive medically. The effect usually takes 3-5 days to become apparent, with up to 2 weeks for the full visible effects.

The most common areas to be treated with Botox Injections are:

The Glabellar Muscle / Glabellar Line Treatment – this is the muscle at the top of the nose which causes the characteristic ’11 lines’ when frowning. Over time, these lines become more permanent. Botulinum (or Botox) in this muscle reduces the formation of these lines.

The Forehead / Forehead Line Treatment – when eyebrows are raised in surprise, your forehead frontalis muscle forms horizontal lines. Botulinum (or Botox) prevents this. This is of the most popular areas in newscasters and actors (watch for this on TV). Note that to treat the forehead, the glabellar must be done at the same time.

The Crows’ Feet / Crow’s Feet Treatment – the muscles around the eyes do a lot of work when you smile. You’ll notice how these areas wrinkle especially at the side of the eyes. Again, over time these become permanent. Note that treating both eyes counts as a single ‘area’ of treatment.

The Gummy Smile / Gummy Smile Treatment – a Gummy Smile is when a larger than normal proportion of the gums shows when smiling. This can start to bother people when a few millimeters of gum are displayed above the upper teeth when smiling. People often find themselves covering their mouth when they laugh or smile and this can cause embarrassment.

The Smokers’ Smile / Smokers’ Smile Treatment – a common complaints we hear from patients is the appearance over time of vertical lip lines, commonly referred to as “smoker’s lines” or “lipstick lines”. These stubborn wrinkles are caused by a variety of factors, including age, genetics, repetitive lifestyle habits, and in some individuals, smoking.

Botox Injections can also be used to treat other areas of the face in combination with other beauty treatments – your clinician can discuss these with you.

Other Medical Treatments using Botox…

Treating Hyperhidrosis / Excess sweating with Botox Injections

Excess sweating affects 1 in 100 people in the UK and mainly involves the armpits, palms and the feet. It can be extremely distressing and difficult to treat. Injections of botulinum toxin into these areas has been shown to reduce the amount of sweat produced markedly and safely, although the effect is variable and not permanent. It is a far safer option than surgery. The armpits are the most commonly treated area. The process takes about 30-45 minutes.

Treating Migraine with Botox

Migraine pain and symptoms affect 18% of women and 8% of men. According to the Department of Health (2005) eight million people get migraines in the UK. Migraine is the most common form of disabling headache that sends patients to see their doctors. Although many can be treated successfully with lifestyle changes and certain medications, some people have real problems controlling the number of headaches and intensity, leading to loss of work days, social engagements, time with the family and so on.

Botulinum has been well established as an effective treatment for migraine, with the added advantage of possibly relaxing some wrinkles along the way, and has proved particularly helpful for clients unwilling or unable to tolerate medication. Come and ask us about this treatment that can have life-changing benefits.
