Dermal Fillers

Home / Beauty Treatments / Dermal Fillers

The fundamental effect of dermal fillers, face fillers or lip fillers is that they add volume, or produce a “plumping” effect. This simply implies that they will plump-up the area which has received the injection, levelling it with other parts of the skin and making it look plumped out, even and no longer sunken. Ultimately, different fillers may achieve this goal in slightly different ways, but the result is that the skin will look plump and firm, young and refreshed.

The most common dermal fillers used are based on hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance in the skin which creates the ‘cement’ between the cells making up the wall of the skin. As we age, the cement wears away and the volume gradually depletes, thus the skin looks more sunken and hollowed. By artificially reintroducing the cement, we return the volume to the areas to restore the youthful look. These dermal fillers or face fillers are by their nature temporary, and the effect usually lasts 6-9 months. Unlike most cosmetic or beauty treatments, fillers provide an almost immediate effect which continues to improve over subsequent days.

What Areas Can Dermal Fillers Be Used To Treat?

Dermal fillers are primarily used in the face to restore lost volume. These will be most evident in several key areas:

  • Nasolabial folds – these are the lines which pass from the side of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. They are the most noticeable of areas for volume loss in the face, and the most commonly and easily correctable with fillers.
  • Marionette lines – these lines drop down from the corners of the mouth to the chin and give the impression of the old-style ventriloquist doll, or ‘marionette’.
  • Forehead and crows-feet lines – these wrinkles become more permanent as we age as the muscles involved are always active in our expressions. In combination with botulinum toxin, these can be very effectively treated.
  • Lips – these are a very popular treatment area for those who require a fuller look to their lips. We will be offering this treatment soon.
  • Cheek augmentation – over the years the cheeks, which have a plump and youthful appearance to start, lose volume and flatten out. In some cases they become hollow or indented. Fillers can be used very effectively in these areas.

What Kinds Of Dermal Fillers Do We Use?

We use Juvederm Ultra and Belotero in the cosmetic clinic. These both have excellent safety and effectiveness records, and they both have lidocaine added. This is a local anaesthetic that makes for a much more comfortable cosmetic procedure.

How Long Does A Dermal Filler Treatment Take?

Firstly our clinician assesses exactly what is needed to get the best results, the amount of dermal filler required of course depends on the area treated. A numbing cream is applied to the area for 45 minutes to allow the maximum comfort for the procedure. The dermal filler injections themselves require 15-20 minutes, more if several areas are treated.
