Business Showcase: Dr Rahman – Dr-SR Beauty Clinic, in Newport, South Wales

Dr Sadequr Rahman has been a GP in South Wales since 2003 and a Facial Aesthetician (Cosmetic Doctor) since 2011. He performs non-surgical cosmetic procedures to enhance and improve facial features and also runs the occasional marathon!

What made you want to get into what you’re doing now?

The Royal College of GPs ran a course for doctors who wanted to train in using Botulinum Toxin (of which the best known brand is Botox TM). From that day, I was hooked on the idea of helping people realise their beauty.

What projects are you working on right now?

Right now I’m working with colleagues on Harley Street to develop the perfect ‘lip pout’ filler technique, and on introducing vitamin drip treatment to the clinic. Rejuvenation and rehydration all in one!

What was your first ever job?

I worked in Sidcup in Kent as a junior doctor. Ironically, I was so frightened to insert needles that the nurses had to hold my hand.

What is your proudest achievement?

Finishing the Brighton Marathon in 4 hours and 45 minutes and raising hundreds for the Alzheimer’s Society. Oh, and becoming a member of the Royal College of GPs.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

A guy called Brendon Burchard who is recognised as the leading marketer and inspirational speaker in the world. It was after hearing him speak in London that I decided to start my own business. If you’ve never heard of him, I recommend you check out his YouTube channel.

Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 years?

I have recently realised that the beauty business is having a crisis of imagination. If you walk into one clinic and it feels much like any other – nobody stands out.  My plan is to be a leading authority in the cosmetics industry in South Wales but to also be known as slightly risqué, I think it’s the only way to grow the business in the next few years. For example, I’m running a new marketing campaign under the tagline ‘We don’t do Ugly’ – it’s generated some strong reactions in the same way that Marmite does.

Any advice for people wanting to enter your field?

You have to connect with the client. When they come to me it’s not just that they want me to inject them. They want me to understand and help them decide how to look better. It’s all about listening and building the relationship. If you are coming in hoping to make quick money, or if you think attending one course in giving fillers makes you an expert, you’re in for disappointment. It takes time to learn the skills. I strongly advise anyone starting out, to have an expert observe them at work. I’ve personally mentored a nurse who now has a thriving business in Whitchurch. I will say this in closing – being an aesthetician is probably the most fun one can have as a doctor!
